A statement is a narrative account of some event made by a witness, in which he/she acknowledges what was seen or heard actually occurred in his/her presence and is not "here-say". A witness statement can be used to impeach that witness, should the statement be changed during later testimony.

Statements can be obtained in many different ways including:
